Ivorak got a reaction from Mallos in Roguelike Celebration
The Roguelike Celebration is an online conference celebrating roguelikes and similar games, with talks given both my game creators and players. Last year's conference was held in an interactive online space styled after a MUD. It was designed for the conference but open-sourced for similar events: https://github.com/lazerwalker/azure-mud.
    Sharing here for two reasons:
Current MD players might enjoy attending the event (will take place October 16th & 17th). Seems like something that would appeal to a lot of you, and you might come back with some ideas to add to MagicDuel. They currently have a call for proposals open for new talks. If there's an aspect of MagicDuel you find particularly intriguing, you should consider submitting a proposal by June 25. Speakers are paid, and you might even attract a few new players to MagicDuel. You can also talks from last year here: https://roguelike.club/event2020.html
If you're thinking about submitting a talk proposal, consider sharing it here for feedback from your fellow MagicDuel adventurers. Also feel free to throw out some ideas for talks you think might fit the CFP but aren't something you personally feel qualified to talk about; maybe someone else will pick up the torch.

Ivorak reacted to Chewett in Buildings - An Upgradeable framework for A25
Today I have added in the structure and code to create upgradeable buildings in MagicDuel. These will allow players to pay resources towards a project which will, over time, grow and provide additional functionality. An example of this is a treasury that if properly maintained will grow and allow more items and creatures to be stored.
There is a wide range of possibilities with this that I plan to expand this to encompass and I am sure the A25 team can come up with ideas that I have not even considered! Some examples include contributing resources to your lands armoury to provide bonuses, charging fees at land boundaries (if protected!), and even the ability to blockade scenes and other areas in a "war footing". Or you could have a community shed which, is improved would allow a wider range of items to be grown, and tools to be used. The ability to "upgrade" a scene using this framework is pretty wide so I am open to ideas about how you could create an upgradable building.
The start of this however is the humble building, a framework that allows contribution towards resources in MagicDuel. For the moment the underlying code and tables are in place and I plan to continue the work to make it more functional.
I will detail more information once I have the first instance implemented and I can demonstrate how it works within MD. A25 members are welcome to ask my questions on our PM thread beforehand however as the (read only interface) is currently up. Please note nothing you see below is currently fixed.

Well, I meant just general organization, indexing, helpful hints, whatever it takes for someone first entering the site to know what it is they are looking at and how to find what they want.  Hopefully something more than a "Read Me" file, but that's the idea.

Ivorak reacted to Fyrd Argentus in GWI Project Manager Proposal
So, since my return I have been considering what project to throw my obsessive energies into.  On the one hand, I’ve realized that my sweeping Lost Path Adventure clickie quest only encompassed lands that MP3 could reach, and that a Loreroot and a GG quest are begging to be created.
On the other hand, those would not address the most pressing need of the realm, that being the dwindling population.  You all may be slow-boiling lobsters, but my 8-year absence gives me a disturbing perspective.  With the GWI project stalled, it would be premature to try to draw in more players.  The process needs to be, in sequence:
    1) Fix the bugs, soft locks, and polish the rough edges.
    2) Create a more engaging initial experience, with better tutorial function to create an understanding/appreciation for the game
    3) Only then wage a publicity campaign, focusing on text-based venues like Facebook
    4) Deal with wrinkles as we get feedback, smoothing the path of integration.
I am hereby offering my services as Project Manager for GWI.  I’m not asking for coding tools (yet) but rather for some authority to act as Creative Director, and be able to ask for help to change things without running polls and surveys at every step of the way.  An important function here would be to put a buffer between the critical voices of veteran players and the admin/coders doing the hard work.  There is little risk in this path, because a) there’s not much I could do to screw it up permanently, and b) change can and will continue, as long as we persist.
Am I qualified to take on such a role?  If the complexity of my Lost Path adventure is not proof enough, I offer my past RL experiences as PM/QA/R&D driving the technical side of creating a multi-million dollar business unit within a large corporation, small business owner/operator, university adjunct professor, leader of cub scouts and baby soccer, cat herder extraordinaire at various times as committee chair and/or board member at our church, writer, and survivor of fatherhood.  I also wasted much of my youth creating and running D&D worlds.
Here are some high points of my proposed plan, in those 4 phases:
    1) Fix the bugs, soft locks, and polish the rough edges.
The riddles must be fixed – they are a major negative right now
Tools must be shorter duration, but replaceable to avoid soft lock
The arena error messages need to be gone
Does anybody make the balloon work?  I’ve not managed it yet.
    2) Create a more engaging initial experience, with better tutorial function
Scenario-setting intro – tell the story of a castaway, marooned in a strange place
Ask a bunch of leading questions that help solidify the player's RP character in their minds
Door-bell – new players trigger STORM and red admin message, to draw help
Recruit more alts to greet and interact with newbies
Get some role-play and combat happening on the island
Lots more help and explanatory clickies to spoon-feed the cautious players
              Bling and flashes and action
              Bird nest talks about creatures
Shells scattered everywhere, linked to the newbie power-ups and creature slots
Each shell adds a layer of spin/understanding of the energy process
“I am the soul of a creature past.  I will manifest as you choose.”
“Do not fear harm, you are in a place where all that is behind you.”
“Be brave.  The spirits of your friends will always be with you.”
Etc.  With a dozen shells scattered around the island, are a tutorial
Get some more diverting mini-quests going right there on the island
    3) Only then wage a publicity campaign, focusing on text-based venues like Facebook
We need an active Facebook page to “sell” the game concept
People who engage in Facebook and the like will be more attracted to MD
It must accurately pitch the differences and virtues of the game
Not an arcade shoot-up, rather a mind-trip etc. etc.
If every player got every friend to “like” that FB page, we could get in a wave
If GWI is engaging enough at that moment, it could snowball
    4) Deal with wrinkles as we get feedback, smoothing the path of integration.
We will learn to target our advertising, and reduce newbie surprise
The MP3/MP4 training problem might be solved
Overcrowding of the space/server resources might be new
We might need more resources, RP items generated, avatars, etc.
We will learn about hurdles and integration issues and fix them
Others with different interests will continue refining other aspects of MD according to their own creative vision.  I have some passion for this project.  I hope you will all support me in this effort.  Thank you.

So we're debating what to do about the broken bookshelves in the MDA.
For a temporary fix, let's just have one section be a link directly to MD-Archives.com, one a link to the Forum, one a link to the Facebook page (which incidentally needs to be taken over and revitalized) and the third a menu to other possible related or useful sites such as Discord and other internet resources.
The next step would be to make sure MD-Archives.com has the most user-friendly interface & inline help we can give it.
Only then should we worry about making a pretty bookshelf facade for the articles.

Ivorak reacted to Muratus del Mur in Alliances and Guilds backdoors
every backdoor into an ally will come with benefits and sacrifices.
Thinking about how to do this, will bring up important concepts and ways of using a25. For example, i think such a backdoor could benefit from a global counter, to prevent it being used too often, or maybe a check for the ally state, to work only if ally is disbanded...things that do not exist right now, but i will code them, and/or document how its done.
Alliances and guilds should have such backdoors, at least in my opinion.

Someone asked, what if i have 100 woodcutting but i am in GG, does that make me a lr citizen? well... that would not be ok, but if you could get lr citizenship, and ally membership, at a cost...lets say it costs you your woodcutting skill to  do this, OR, you keep woodcutting skill but lose all other similar skills?
The one not joining via an invite, should sacrifice something for this.
This is intended as a sabotaje tool, or for someone that is rejected by that group but fits from a technical perspective with it.

My problem is...how to distribute the info on how to access the backdoor? to kings of opposing lands?

ps. i am aiming for a self balancing mechanism, not for chaos. Consider such ways to join allies, limited to large time intervals, or by sacrifice, i hope they will be used to conclude tensions that have no way to manifest otherwise. I learned much from past events, disbanding allies without dedicated tools, but by actual treason, is much more hurtful.

Ivorak reacted to dst in A hello and a farewell at least for now
I don't know how MD came up tonight in my mind. Maybe cause Christmas is close by and omg how I looooved MD's Christmas. Or maybe my haunted and tired mind needed a break from reality. Don't know..but the fact is that here I am once more to say hello and then fa  rewell.
I don't know how I drifted away from the game. I never thought it will ever be possible but you know :"never say never".
I miss the game, I miss the thrill, I miss the quests and mostly I miss my friends in here. It's been a very very long journey. I grew up with MD, I've learned with MD and I've evolved with MD. I've learned a lot about myself. I took that knowledge with me in RL and I expanded.
Life has been tough but defo kinder than for many so I am grateful for that.
I want to come back and I haven't given up the thought. I just wish MD will still be here when I decide it's time. Oh and do something with the horrible interface! It's how we say in Romanian "passion killer"
Hope you are all well and so are your loved ones. We are certainly living "interesting times". I will never again wish that to anyone .
Hugs and kisses until next time,

Ivorak got a reaction from Steno in The Town crier - What would you use it for?
I'd like to see the town crier crying a variety of news and updates.
I think System announcements (e.g., "All shared items have been returned to their original place.") should be moved to the town crier since they're just reminders. (I would prefer that a red announcements link signified something more than a regular reminder.)
See the town crier mostly being used for automated announcements, but might also be useful as a spell (with certain rules for use) for land leaders to announce special events.
P.S. I may be a bit odd, but the town crier is one of my favorite features, even though he's so quiet now. I think the feature has lots of potential for setting a vibe, and I'll try to think more on how it can be used.

Ivorak reacted to Aelis in Grand Duke of the East
On Day 95, Year 15, at Sage's Keep,  @Chewett was made Grand Duke of the Lands of the East and King of Marind Bell. This is the first time someone in the realm is elected to rule two lands at the same time. An official minute of the event is located at the following topic:

Following the unprecedented ceremony, the Demon of the East has recognized Chewett's rulership over the Tribunal part of the Lands of the East as seen in Announcement 4963. This also marks the first time kingship tools are made available for the Lands of the East.
Prior to this election, the East had seen a couple of (somewhat unsuccessful) claims to power from Granos to Eon and Shadowseeker, then Sunfire and finally Pipstickz. Chewett went a different route, though: he met directly with all interested parties and managed to gather their support. It was a very clever move in terms of strategy and timing. Interestingly enough, the concept of a Dukedom in the East was proposed before by Pipstickz, but his idea did not gain enough traction at the time.
With all this happening only a few days prior to the very anticipated 15th Anniversary, it almost looks as if the birthday is already happening. I look forward to seeing (and documenting) the changes that this new dual rulership shall bring to our realm.

Ivorak reacted to Steno in MagicDuel-Histories and Legends
So... I was thinking, since there are a lot of older accounts being reactivated (so much so that Mur had to make an announcement about ancient powers, lol) that a LOT has happened in the realm of MagicDuel. As some of the ads for the game even proclaim: "We never reset"!
I don't know very much about what has happened in the twelve years that I've been gone. The Adventure Log is pretty awesome, but it is a lot.
I think this would be really handy for old-new players as well as brand new players! The accessibility of lore helps immerse new players.
So I wanted to propose a contest, as MD seems to have quite a few authors.
Pick one of your favorite events in the history of MD that you witnessed. Try to write a short story-a cliff notes version of what happened if you will-of that event.

I am unsure what the reward of this contest will be. I will likely give the winner a silver coin as well whatever else I can cobble together.
The contest will end 3/13/20. The winner will be decided by me and a mystery judge.
Try to keep the versions of the stories clean, obviously. Also try to keep secrets out of stories, unless they are imperative for the tale being told.

The winner will receive a creature of the 14th anniversary as awarded by Aia!

Pffft! 3, or 4, or even 5 seasons isn't nearly enough.
You'd probably find ancient Japan's system of 72 microseasons interesting. You can search elsewhere for specific names.
I think farmer's almanacs are really cool too, even if they don't explicitly name the subdivision of seasons.

I started reading the 'dawn of astronomy' again, but this time mixing chapters.
But I digress - here's what caught my eye: the Egyptians had a 365 days year, they had 12 months, they had the zodiac, they had 12 hrs, but they had...3 seasons. Sowing season, harvesting season and inundation season. It was all about the Nile - IT created this peculiarity. For the Egyptians, the rising of the Nile, which coincided with the summer solstice, was the New Year's day - they had to prepare for plowing and sowing henceforth.
For us, New Year's when the long winter nights finally give in. I've heard of (obviously) 4 seasons and 2 seasons, but not of 3. Does anyone know of other strange numbers of seasons? Now or then?

Ivorak reacted to No one in The Economy - Resources
@Chewett , as long as the current system with item creation is used (using entire stack instead of the required amount), the system will not be used to its max.
It was understandable at beginning as @Muratus del Mur wanted to withdraw from market the huge amounts of resources available and that worked ... sort of. Now we need the rate of item creation (thus consumption) to increase and for this we need to allow smaller amounts to be transferred / converted.
Also, to have an increase flow of resources, MD would benefit from some sort of Alliance stashes where and / alliance specific lands.
There is no competition anymore, there is no purpose as what is new is either too expensive for some or too common for others. We need to bring ppl to work together and to give them some sort of benefit thus we should shift focus to benefits for groups (aka alliances).

Ivorak reacted to Aia del Mana in The Economy - Resources
This opinion I do hold, in terms of resources.
Presently, if one should require of a certain resource, she merely obtains of the tool required, and gathers of it herself.
In the other-realm, if one doth require of such resources, the preferred method were to pay a levy to another who hath profession to provide of it. In example, one who doth require of bread shall pay the baker, and receive in return. The baker shall require significant effort to create of this bread, and so to recuperate of her investment, she hath trained herself well, and purchased of large ovens, and hath made contracts with those that supply her flour.
If one should require resources to have value, they must be scarce, or require of significant effort to create, or have desirable purpose. An example of this were the Memory Stone - this were sufficiently scarce, doth require of a specialised detector, and were immediately purposeful as a conduit for spell-imprinting.

Ivorak reacted to Aia del Mana in Guilds - A Discussion
I make note of the effort and time investment required to enter of a profession in the other-realm.
    If a guild were based upon an action, then one thinkst there must be at least two purposes of this guild;
    the first, to train of those to perform this action;
the second, to allow recognition of those with expertise in this action, that they may provide mentorship to those that train.

With these principles in mind, I should think that a professional woodcutter may fell several trees in quick succession, and have access to the high-quality axes (or chain-saws) exclusive to the guild, that do allow one's advancement more rapidly. One may join this guild (to the exclusion of all others) to gain of this access and devote of focused effort. Similar examples should follow for the other guilds with a defined role of resource-gathering, or crafting.
Of the Archivists - I am quite inclined to agree with Ailith on this matter, unless the Adventure Log should return.
Of the Caretakers - death must first be altered, as suggested in the other-thread by Chewett.

Ivorak reacted to Chewett in New Titles - Job titles and RP titles
Here I outline a plan which has existed since the titles were changed to having two at once. The reason this hasnt been fully implemented is that I have no desire to half implement something in MD, leaving it in a limbo state.
I see this title change very important, leading onto both changes in the resource economy and alliance/guild system.
The premise is this, instead of randomly picking two titles which you wear upon your character you have two titles. Roleplay Titles and job titles.
Currently the majority of titles fall into category 1, Roleplay titles. These relate to you as a character and who you are. An example is the tag "Bringers of Light". This would be the main tag that is shown first on your character page. These are designed to be customized to you and slowly gained from your king, or similar.
The second, and new title would is called the job title. If you have no roleplay title it will be shown as your main title however those that have a roleplay title it would be shown below that. The job title is something that would have an active and passive effect in what you do day to day.
    Examples of job progression
Amateur thing doer -> Apprentice thing doer -> experienced thing doer -> Master thing doer -> chief thing doer
Here while working on "thing doing" you will slowly progress in the ranks. Each "level up" in rank will require certain tasks to be performed, and in addition they will confer certain bonuses. You may need to learn from a master, you may just need to practice hard, or you may need consensus from a secret community of thing doers.
The basic idea is that with job titles you can slowly progress them to a level wherin you become the best at doing the thing.
At higher levels, you will gain access to better tooling, and potentially even access to the guilds themselves attributed to those skills. This may be one of the ways we start allowing other guilds into the game. Obviously consideration would be given to those currently in the guilds, as we wouldnt want to just say "You no longer have an alliance"
What jobs could I do? Any!
The idea with jobs is that like tags, you would be able to change them as you wish however there would be a cost. At the higher level of tags there would require a continual effort to maintain the skill. If you didnt continue to maintain it the tag itself would degrade to a specific level (e.g. to experienced). This base level wouldn't be able to be lost, but would show that while you may have reached a higher level, you havent practised the skills recently.
Depending on the decay rate, you might be able to keep two or so skills at the highest level however the others would degrade. This then means you cant have one person who is the best at everything and encourages working with others who are able to get the higher level tools/ingredients that you need.
Another facet to this, is that I wouldnt want to necessarily limit a players pick of jobs. While mechanically there will only be a certain set of jobs in the game initially I would welcome any player to put forward their idea of a job if they want to play it. Within reason if it makes sense we would look at implementing that job with its own progression tree.
For example a water dowser may focus on a subtree where he works with woodcrafting to repair his buckets. Skilling both woodcutting and water dowsing at the same time. However since it is a duel skill, neither would be able to reach the higher levels.

Opinions are welcome, but first we need to fix the economy.

As to alliances, their structure and importance in MD is being reworked on the backend. Its no secret I and many others in MD have agreed that the current setup, especially the loyalty requirements of the leader, is not very "MD".
The initial idea of loyalty determining the leader was always thought to be good. However since loyalty was gained in a number of ways that are not representing actual "Loyalty" to the land, it became pretty moot.
Many of those who  read this will have been asked about their thoughts on alliances over the past month, by a number of people. I have asked a couple of people to talk to people and gets ideas for a better "alliance" structure. Its something that has been on the back burner for years because its never really sat well with it. Once I can summarise the opinions I will be posting it publicly and then people can give their final opinions before I finalise an idea and start planning the changes codewise.

Ivorak reacted to Ailith in Logs of kills and revivals
I would like to request a log of both kills and revivals be made available for all to see so that the entire population has access to data on who gets killed, how often and by whom.

and examples for headers might be:

Player Killed, Killer, Date, Time, Kill Method / item used
    and
Player revived, Reviver, Date, Time, Kill Method / item used

I believe that this information belongs to the entire population, and I can see no viable or arguable reason why such logs may not exist.
They could be placed in MDA with the logs of item transfers etc.

Ivorak reacted to Jubaris in Land Voting (The Town Crier) upgrades
I'm not sure how many times was land voting successful in MD, but it was rare for sure. It needs to change to make sense.
The 'vote' power of those that didn't vote in combination with the lack of initiative of the land applicants is the essential problem. Originally I wanted to suggest for the vote power formula to change, but Ungod talked me over in another direction
    What I suggest is:
    1)  Citizen Voting Forum interface should be changed to introduce a welcoming and descriptive message of the land, containing helpful instructions (such as whom to contact for more information).
    2) Applicant should have a text box to enter a message why he wants to join upon applying
    3) Each citizen should get an inbox notification about a new applicant with their message from point 2.
This should galvanize activity in the land voting matter. If it proves to be not enough, I'll continue with formula changing suggestions
    More thoughts from anyone?

Ivorak got a reaction from Kaya in So how do we measure time in MD?
I read through this quickly, so I may have missed if anyone suggested this, but as a core value of MD is in the other players, I measure time as interactions between players and other players or players and the environment. If no one is present, time might as well be standing still.
There are, of course, things that happen if no one is present, but nothing too important.

I think these events should be kept for those that subscribe to them and not to be forced on everybody ... especially when there is nothing beneficial in this AL for the rest of MD.
As I see it, this is becoming a duplicate of PO's mass dream (to be read abuse).
