Also, do you see a difference between statuses and forum posts in terms of which is the proper place for this? Atop the forum rules it says "Please post below any comments on the rules or suggest changes." I didn't post there because this was more a question than a comment; I though perhaps there was more than that one rules page and I just wasn't seeing it. I probably should have searched, but I was tired and might still have missed something.

what the be nice policy stands for. Much of these rules are quite similar to these forum's, but the abbreviation is much more succinct and communicable. It doesn't get rid of the need for detailed rules, but reduces the need for their invocation.

For example, Quora has a "Be Nice" policy. I'm not sure that this is the answer for MD, but for Quora it really has done a lot to foster a constructive community (it's not perfect, but it's a large community that works pretty well). This "Be Nice" policy is a simple statement that summarizes a lot of rules and conveys the general idea that we are to be constructive and helpful.
